Neuronox ® is a Botulinum toxin type A complex purified from Clostridium botulinum, manufactured by Medy-Tox® in Korea. Its dosage form is injectable, and its appearance is a white lyophilized cake. 1 vial of Neuronox ® contains 100 units of botulinum toxin (type A), 0.5 mg of human serum albumin, and 0.9 mg of NaCl.
Neuronox® is the biogeneric of Botox ®. of Allergan in the USA.
Botulinum toxins, including Neuronox®, block neuromuscular transmission binding to acceptor sites on motor nerve terminals, enter the nerve terminals, and inhibit acetylcholine release. This inhibition occurs as the neurotoxin cleaves SNAP-25, a protein integral to the successful docking and release of acetylcholine from vesicles situated within nerve endings.
When injected intramuscularly at therapeutic doses, Neuronox® produces partial chemical denervation of the muscle resulting in a localized muscle activity reduction. It is mainly used in Anti-wrinkle cosmetics worldwide. Botulinum toxin type A drugs have been used for various indications such as hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, and cervical dystonia.
